Your hair’s water content is what makes it stretchy, elastic and moisturized. Kind of like your skin. And similar to your skin and the rest of your body, your hair can become dehydrated and very dry if too much moisture is lost through evaporation. And even more so if that moisture is not replenished.
As the sea has high salt content, it is osmotic, meaning that it leaches water out of your hair.
The result: Dry, parched, brittle knotty locks. And if your blonde, you can expect it to turn into yellow brassy tones.
The hair becomes dull, tangled rough feeling and can be hard to comb or brush out. If you have colour in your hair, salt water damage will give it a very hard texture and may strip your colour. In the worst form salt water can cause split ends and breakage begins.
The same goes for chlorinated pool water, which has harsh chemicals that damage your hair and most of the blondes knows that spending too much time in the pool gives your blonde hair a greenish tone.
Every town’s water is different especially in rural or farming areas. Brackish water is water having more salinity than fresh water, but not as much as sea water. It may result from mixing seawater with freshwater together, as in estuaries, or it may occur in brackish fossil aquifers. Thus brackish water also cause hair to become dry and can over time change colour.
Hair that’s exposed to the sun has less water content and can absorb less water from the environment leaving hair dry and fragile. Melanin protects the hair from free radicals from the sun, but an excess of exposure causes lightening and fading of hair colour, whether its natural or colour treated hair.
